Truly one of our favorite nymph patterns, the Bread Crust – Bead Head is an old pattern that as far as we can determine, came from Pennsylvania. It became popular in the Rocky Mountain West in the 1970’s. It kind of disappeared for a while but we had a request to tie some up as a custom pattern for one of our fly shop customers, The Fly-Fisher in Denver. That shop is gone now but after adding it to our line, it became popular again with many other shops.
While we can’t really determine its original intent, it really works well as both a cased and a free-living caddis.
